Public Schools of Robeson County: STEP Summer Camp

STEP Summer Camp: Learning, Growing and Preparing for a New School Year

This summer, the Public Schools of Robeson County provided students with an opportunity tocontinue learning, build relationships, explore new experiences, and prepare for a successful new school year through STEP Summer Camp. The eight day summer learning program included students supported through the McKinney Vento Program as well as students who were permanently housed. Bringing students together created an inclusive environment where they could learn alongside one another, develop friendships, build confidence, and enjoy experiences designed to support their academic and personal growth.

A major focus of STEP Camp was helping reduce barriers that can affect a student’s educational success. Summer can be an especially important time for students experiencing housing transitions. Maintaining connections with students and families provides an opportunity to identify needs, offer support, and help students remain connected to their education even when school is not in session.

Learning was incorporated throughout the camp in ways that were engaging and meaningful. Students participated in reading, mathematics, social emotional learning, career exploration, cultural activities, creative projects, and hands on educational experiences. Activities were designed to strengthen academic skills while encouraging students to work together, solve problems, express themselves, and discover new interests.

STEP Camp also focused on preparing students for the transition back to school. Staff were able to spend time with students and families, identify educational and school related needs, and help connect families with resources and services that could remove barriers to attendance and participation during the upcoming school year.

By combining education, enrichment, student support, and community partnership, STEP Camp helped students take meaningful steps toward a strong start to the new school year.
