houseDuring the 2017-18 school year, North Carolina public schools reported that 30,544* students enrolled in grades K-12 experienced homelessness during the school year. The previous school year reporting showed that 20,297 students experienced homelessness.

Housing categories recognized with the McKinney-Vento Act include:

  • doubled-up
  • shelters and transitional housing
  • unsheltered, which includes cars, parks, campgrounds, temporary trailers (such as FEMA trailers), inadequate housing, or abandoned buildings
  • hotels and motels
