Helping Youth Overcome Past Trauma and Build Resilient Futures

Social/Emotional session at NAEHCY with Jan Moore, National Center for Homeless Education and Sara Bigley, NC Foster Care Program

Students in foster care and/or experiencing homelessness often survive traumatic events like neglect, abuse, domestic violence, natural disasters, and lack of resources, in addition to school mobility. These can damage the foundation necessary for learning, causing academic and behavioral struggles. In this session, staff from the National Center for Homeless Education and the NC Foster Care Education Program will discuss the impacts of trauma and share strategies to develop a safe, supportive environment where youth can build resiliency, make positive connections, and achieve improved academic, behavior, and life outcomes.
