Trauma and the Social/Emotional Issues of Homeless Children and Youth

Social/Emotional session at NAEHCY with Cheryl Fuller, Franklin County Schools

This session will explore the social and emotional issues of children and youth experiencing homelessness and discover the similarities to the social/emotional effects of students who face trauma. A brief overview of common behaviors exhibited by children who have experienced trauma and/or homelessness will be followed by specific strategies needed to respond appropriately to these children. The last part of the session will explore how supporting children in these situations can often trigger previous traumas in the support person’s life.The session will close with strategies for responding to triggers and prioritizing self-care.
