Pam Story - NAEHCY Homeless Liaison of the Year

Pamela Story
named NAEHCY
Homeless Liaison of the Year

Congratulations to Pam Story, the North Carolina Homeless Liaison of the Year was named the NAEHCY Homeless Liaison of the Year at the November 2021 Conference!

Pam serves as the homeless liaison for the Cumberland County Schools. She is well known in her district and across the state for being a strong and vocal advocate for children. Pam acknowledges that it can be hard to work collaboratively with federal programs, transportation, child nutrition services, Prime Time, AIG, administrators, and central office staff on an ongoing basis, but she considers this to be a labor of love. She believes outreach with community stakeholders is a must to help her program be successful. Pam enjoys being a mentor to new homeless liaisons and a support person for the district, as well as the state office. She is a dedicated member of the North Carolina Homeless Education leadership team. Her passion for many years has been striving to ensure compliance with the McKinney-Vento Act. Pam prioritizes immediate enrollment for students in transition and provides a strong voice for all students, especially unaccompanied homeless youth.

Pam serves as an active member of the Continuum of Care and on the advisory board of Connections of Fayetteville, which is a day resource center for homeless families. She is also a member of several community boards and commissions including the Cumberland County Child Fatality Review Team, Cape Fear Valley Board of Trustees, Cumberland County Public Library Board of Trustees, and the Salvation Army Advisory board. In her role as a member of each of these committees, she educates and collaborates with community stakeholders. Pam leads Cumberland County school social workers in an annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive for homeless children. They collaborate with the Register of Deeds for an annual backpack drive providing more than 1,000 stuffed backpacks to be shared with Cumberland County students. She hosts small celebrations in each district for graduates experiencing homelessness, providing them with graduation keepsakes and backpacks with toiletries, pillows, and blankets. Pam helps plan and serve on the local Veterans Stand Down. She also participates in the community day of service for the homeless by providing information and books. Pam feels the most important project each year is to ensure training is provided on McKinney-Vento and the signs of homelessness to her district staff and community. Through strong collaborations and awareness, she provides support and resources for her students.

“Through the years, my heart has been captured by children in transition who through no fault of their own still manage to survive and even thrive.”
